El-Nino floods Report - Jubaland
Jubaland State is a federal member state in southern Somalia, bordering Kenya to the southwest. It is one of the five federal member states established as part of the federalization process in Somalia. The transitional capital of Jubaland is Kismayo, which is also the largest city in the region. In the context of the recent El Niño floods that occurred in Somalia in 2023, Jubaland State, like many other parts of Somalia, was severely affected. El Niño is a climate phenomenon characterized by the warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, which can lead to extreme weather patterns around the world, including heavy rainfall and flooding in certain regions. The floods in Jubaland State resulted in widespread displacement of people, destruction of homes, infrastructure damage, loss of crops, livestock, and disruption of livelihoods. These impacts were particularly devastating in Jubaland since many people already face food insecurity and limited access to basic services.
Affected Districts and Key Impacts
Bardhere , Burdhubo , Luuq , Afmadow and Kismaayo were the most affected Districts in Jubaland State.
There were bidges washed out , Displace People and Water infrastructures destroyed by the floods
Flood Impacts
Washed-out Bridges
The bridges of Bardhere & Burdhubo connecting the districts villages and to surrounding areas were completely washed out, cutting off critical transport and aid routes. This has made it difficult to deliver humanitarian assistance and support to the Districts , this has also led to isolating the towns and worsening the humanitarian situation. The destruction of this key infrastructure has disrupted the local economy and hindered the movement of essential goods.
Displacement of People
The rising floodwaters caused the displacement of thousands of families. Many residents have sought refuge in temporary shelters, facing food, water, and health care shortages.
Water Systems
The floodwaters have destroyed water infrastructure, including wells and pumping stations, leaving the affected areas without potable water.
